Air treatment: regenerative solutions for industrial dust collectors

Industrial production processes generate dust that pollutes the working environment. Regenerative solutions for industrial dust collectors are designed to treat highly dust-laden air. They improve indoor air quality and eliminate the need to purchase disposable filter media. These dust removal and industrial vacuum solutions come in cartridge filters, bag filters, pocket filters and other models adapted to different dust collectors. A regenerable solution can be cleaned mechanically, by means of a manual or pneumatic cleaning system.

Industrial dust collector with cleaning system

It’s possible to install an industrial dust collector with declogging in a workshop, production line or storage area. Some dusts are explosive: aluminum dust, flour dust, wood dust. Others are toxic and present a health risk (CMR dust). Dust is also harmful to production plant, machinery and stock.

Regenerative solutions: cleanable filters

Mobile industrial dust collectors with declogging enable source capture and filtration. The dust collector captures and eliminates various types of dust from machines or manufacturing processes.

The different types of dust processed in industry :

  • suspended dust from 0.001 to 1 micron ;
  • falling dust from 1 to 100 microns ;
  • heavy industrial dust, over 100 microns.

Heavy dust agglomerates in the pre-separator of dust collectors. Falling and suspended dusts are deposited on the various regenerative filters in the dust collectors, the main types of which are listed below.

Regenerative bag filters for industrial dust collectors

Industrial filters and dust collectors with regenerable bags are filtering media that produce good results for the filtration of voluminous wood, grain, seed and metal dusts. The filter bag (sock) is a system generally mounted on a metal frame (basket) or tensioned when fitted with rings. The device offers a large filtration surface, filters particles on its surface and can be unclogged.

Regenerative filter solutions: cartridge filters

Cartridge filters for industrial dust collectors filter out dust and particles. This pleated filter media system is widely used in industrial filtration systems with cleaning devices. Depending on the dust collector, cartridge filters are available in two positions:

  • horizontal cartridge filter ;
  • vertical cartridge filter.

Regenerable industrial filtration: the bag filter

Pocket filters for industrial dust collectors retain metal dust, wood dust, composite dust and all dry dusts. Like other types of filter media, they are available in a range of sizes and shapes (flexible, rigid, metal-framed), depending on the size and type of dust collector. Regenerable bag filters can be hydrophobically or oleophobically treated.

Non-regenerable solutions are also available: G4 particulate air filters.

Filter cleaning for industrial dust collectors

Unlike saturation filter systems, regenerative solutions for industrial dust collectors enable filters to be cleaned regularly. Filter replacement is less frequent than with saturation filter systems (filter media can last for several years). Let’s take a look at filter cleaning methods.

Automatic filter cleaning using compressed air (pulse jet)

A sensor measures the degree of clogging of the dust collector by measuring the differential pressure (delta P): when the differential pressure rises, the system automatically unclogs (a jet of compressed air vibrates the filter media). During unclogging, filter dust falls into a collector. Dust collectors with automatic unclogging systems feature a compressed air reservoir, usually positioned above the filtration unit.

Mechanical filter cleaning

If the industrial dust collector does not have an automatic “jet pulse” cleaning system, manual filter cleaning is also possible. There are several types of manual filter cleaning:

  • manual cleaning/cleaning by compressed air ;
  • cleaning by manual mechanical action.

Manual cleaning using compressed air involves opening a compressed air valve that feeds a venturi nozzle on the cartridge or a rotating device that moves up and down the height of the filter media to blow out the dust.

Mechanical cleaning involves shaking the filter via a cleaning crank. This action on the filter causes the filter media to vibrate and the dust to fall into a tray. Other dust collectors are equipped with a manual brush cleaning system. A crank handle is used to brush the filter media, causing the dust to fall out.

Dust collectors with mechanical cleaning are cleaned with the fan stopped (without suction), so that the dust is not immediately sucked back in.

Dust collectors with automatic jet-pulse cleaning can be cleaned both on-line and off-line. When the fan is off, the cleaning is performed at the end of the cycle.
