VOC and odor treatment

Our industrial VOC and odor destructors represent a range of equipment specially dedicated to the treatment of gaseous pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odors, fumes and various chemical compounds. Our equipment is suitable for all types of industry. Thanks to molecular filtration with activated carbon, pollutants are filtered and captured by adsorption.

Industrial processes and workplace products release gaseous pollutants commonly known as VOCs. These pollutants are generally compounds derived from hydrocarbons, solvents, sulfur compounds, etc…

Wherever possible, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) should be extracted, treated and discharged to the outside.

In many cases, this is not possible, and a mobile source capture or ambient treatment system close to the workstation can significantly reduce operator exposure.

Our range of industrial odour and VOC destroyers

The EPUR B Ex dust collector is a mobile, odor- and VOC-destroying extraction unit equipped with activated carbon filters.

It is particularly suitable forextracting odorous fumes and VOCs from processes that degrade organic materials or vaporize metals (3D printing, additive manufacturing, laser engraving, brazing, gluing, solvent cleaning, etc.).

This device features a high vacuum, and is used to collect air at source via one or two suction hoses and/or through an arm positioned on the device’s top cover.

It can be equipped with 1 or 2 stages of molecular filtration (activated carbon) and/or 1 or 2 preliminary stages of particulate filtration. Quiet and powerful, you can vacuum up to three small workstations or production machines. These dust collectors are suitable for use in ATEX Zone 22.

MOBFAN 4500

mobfan4500 atex mobile filter

The innovative MOBFAN 4500 ATEX activated carbon filter is specially designed to treat odors, solvents, VOCs and other gaseous pollutants.

The unit adapts perfectly to your needs, as all suction systems can be connected: suction table, suction backsplash, piping, ducts, suction arms, etc.

The air is drawn in by a 4500m3/h fan and blown directly through a 36kg cartridge loaded with activated carbon (18.5kg).

MOBFAN 4500 is certified ATEX dust zone 22 and ATEX gas zone 2.

Our filters are made of granular activated carbon, giving them longer life and greater lightness. This will also increase their efficiency, unlike activated carbon fiber.

How to choose the right odor and VOC destroying system?

It’s essential to choose the right filtration system, otherwise the unit may be unsuitable and require frequent replacement of consumables, or it may wear out very quickly and stop working.

Here are the main pitfalls to avoid:

  • Suction of highly dust-laden gaseous pollutants: if this is the case, saturation pre-filters clog up very quickly and require regular maintenance. It is therefore preferable to opt for particle filtration by means of a cleaning dust collector( e.g.DUSTOMAT 16 or DUSTOMAT 4 ) combined with an additional activated carbon filtration stage.
  • Pollutants impossible or difficult to treat with activated carbon: not all pollutants can be adsorbed by activated carbon. Consult the list of main pollutants and their adsorption capacity) link to file “Adsorption potential of pollutants”.

If you’re doing your own research, be sure to find out about the filtering capacity of the device. This will depend on the pollutant, its state (solid or gaseous) and its quantity. This will enable you to select the type of filter the dust collector should have. Secondly, you’ll need to find out how powerful the device is, in other words, how much flow it can deliver. Once again, the unit’s flow rate will depend on the quantity of pollutant and the surface area of the room to be treated. The larger the space, the greater the flow required.

Next, you’ll need to decide which accessory to equip your machine with: a sheath to connect to the production machine, or a suction arm for a workstation.

Which coal to choose?

OBERA has a wide range of activated carbons and adsorbents adapted to the pollutants to be treated.

How do you calculate the maximum service life of activated carbon?

It’s very difficult to predict the lifetime of an activated carbon charge.

Nevertheless, it can be understood if we know the average concentration of the pollutant to be treated. Coal has a pollutant retention capacity of 50% of its specific weight at best.

The coal life L in h of operation can be approximated by the following formula: L = (1000 x P x p / (Q x c)

P weight of carbon charge (in kg), p adsorption potential in %, Q flow rate in m3/h, c pollutant concentration in g/m3

As a general rule, the frequency of replacement is based on feedback. Thanks to the hour counter, you can keep track of the life of a load and organize periodic preventive maintenance at regular intervals.

Adsorption principle

Adsorption, not to be confused with absorption, represents the ability of a solid (adsorbent) to bind to its surface certain gases called adsorbates. This attraction between adsorbent and adsorbate is generally electrostatic.

The adsorbent is a material (activated carbon, for example) whose chemical properties attract certain gases to its surface.

What molecules and odors are treated by OberA’s VOC and industrial odor destroyers?

There are various categories of odour-generating pollutants:

  • Sulfur compounds (H2S, CS2, COS, SO2, dimethyl disulfide, mercaptans, biogas, etc.)
  • Nitrogen compounds (NH3, amines, etc.)
  • VOCs (volatile fatty acids, phenols, polycyclic aromatic compounds, aldehydes, solvents, methyl ethyl ketone MEK, formoles, phthalates, acetones, toluenes, xylenes, styrenes, thiols, formaldehydes, etc.).

Odors in the air of industrial and professional buildings are often temperature-dependent. As a general rule, the higher the air temperature, the more intense the odors.

In which industries are odorous molecules and VOCs found?
