Fiberglass dust during composite cutting

Fiberglass in the composite industry

Fiberglass-reinforced composites are among the most widely used materials in industry. They offer a good balance between mechanical performance, corrosion resistance, and production cost.

These materials are present in many industrial sectors:

  • marine industry
  • swimming pool manufacturing
  • industrial equipment
  • construction
  • plastics processing

Fiberglass composite parts are typically manufactured by lamination or resin infusion. Once cured, they often need to be cut or mechanically adjusted to achieve final dimensions.

These operations can generate composite dust consisting of fibers and cured resin particles.

Dust-generating processes

In composite processing workshops, several operations can produce fiberglass dust. Among the most common processes:

  • cutting composite panels
  • cutting parts to length
  • trimming after molding
  • dimensional adjustment

During these operations, mechanical tools fragment the material and release fine particles. This dust can remain airborne and disperse throughout the work environment.

Health risks

According to prevention recommendations published by INRS, fiber dust can cause various health effects.

Fiberglass can cause:

  • skin irritation
  • eye irritation
  • respiratory irritation

Fine particles from composite processing can also be inhaled by operators. The presence of dust in the air can also cause discomfort in production workshops.
