What is an industrial air purifier?

Definition and role of air purifiers in industrial environments

An industrial air purifier is equipment suitable for professional premises designed to eliminate contaminants present in the air of production areas. Thanks to its high power, the industrial purifier improves air quality in production lines, storage halls, and reception areas.

Our devices are available in several models:

  • Fixed purifiers,
  • Mobile industrial purifiers,
  • Gas and odor purifiers,
  • Dust and gas purifiers for small spaces.

OberA purifiers are equipped with state-of-the-art filtration systems (saturation filters or self-cleaning filters) and are designed to operate 24/7, 365 days a year. They are used in the most demanding industrial environments to eliminate particles, chemical pollutants, viruses, bacteria, and allergens, as well as in offices and open-plan spaces.

OberA’s opinion: an air purifier is a complementary device to an air handling unit (AHU) or source extraction. In certain configurations, the industrial purifier can replace an AHU.

Operating principle and characteristics of an industrial air purifier

How does an air purifier work?

The operation is simple: polluted air is drawn in from the top of the device, passes through several layers of filtration inside, and is then released purified into the environment. This process ensures effective elimination of particles and harmful gases.

The OberA advantage: to ensure effective purification of the area to be treated, our purifiers have a pre-filtration stage (G3 or G4 or ISO Coarse filter). To increase their efficiency, our purifiers incorporate fine filters (M5 to F9 filters).

Important: the filtration stages are determined based on the pollutant to be treated. From the pre-filter to the diffuser filter, including the main filter, all can be configured according to your specific problem. Activated carbon filtration for treating odors and gaseous pollutants will act by adsorption, or a G3, G4, M5, M6, F7, F8, and F9 or HEPA type filtration for fine dust, etc.

Filtration technologies

Industrial air purifiers use various technologies to eliminate pollutants:

  • Mechanical filtration and HEPA filters: capture fine particles and allergens with high efficiency.;
  • Ionization and electrostatic precipitators: neutralize particles by electrically charging them, then collect them on opposing plates.;
  • Absorption and use of activated carbons: eliminate gases and odors by adsorbing molecules onto a porous surface.

Some models include a very high-efficiency filtration stage (HEPA H13 or H14 filters). Most of our purifiers are compatible with the use of carbon filters for gas treatment.

Characteristics of OberA industrial purifiers

We offer several ranges of purifiers to meet the varied needs of industrial clients. The filtration capacity of our air purifiers ranges from 190 m³/h to 20,000 m³/h.

The installation of a purifier requires no connection to an air extraction system or a ventilation duct system.

Another key characteristic of our equipment: their low noise level, which ensures pleasant working conditions for your teams. Portable air purifiers (e.g., office purifiers) are so quiet they go unnoticed (< 24 dB). The most powerful industrial purifiers are much quieter (69 dB) than conventional extraction systems.

Industrial air purifier: various applications

OberA industrial purifiers are suitable for many sectors:

  • Food processing, mechanical, automotive industries: ensure a clean environment, compliant with strict sanitary standards, by eliminating airborne particles and contaminants;
  • Pharmaceutical sector: maintain optimal air quality essential for drug production, by effectively filtering fine particles and contaminating agents;
  • Chemical and petrochemical industries: protect workers and equipment by eliminating chemical vapors and hazardous particles, thereby contributing to a safe working environment.
  • Hotel rooms, catering areas, changing rooms, classrooms, and analytical laboratories : low-flow purifiers eliminate fine particles, suspended viruses, bacteria, and odors.

Our industrial purifiers are designed to capture dust, fine particles, fumes, gaseous pollutants, and oil mists. Some air purifiers allow the installation of extraction arms to capture pollutants at the source, as close as possible to the workstation.

The expert’s word: fixed or mobile, our purifiers capture pollution at the source or in the ambient air, furthermore, these are equipment that guarantee compliance with OELs. They integrate into any type of production facility and logistics site. They provide effective protection solutions for operators using chemicals, handling dusty products, and dusty goods.

ePUR is a robust and reliable industrial range for the treatment of dust, odors, smoke, VOCs, and oil mists.

Available in fixed or mobile versions, it’s easy to adapt to your workspace. The air purifiers in the ePUR air purifiers are equipped with 3 or 4 saturation filter stages, which can be configured to perfectly match the problem to be treated (pre-filter + main filter + diffuser filter). The particulate filters are made of polyester up to HEPA 11, to avoid releasing glass fibers.

Filter media for ePUR generate extremely low pressure drops. The latest generation of electronically commutated high-efficiency fans are fully compliant with the ErP2015 directive. A 10,000 m3/h ePUR, for example, will consume just 750W, 10 to 20 times less than an industrial suction and dedusting system or an air handling unit with the same flow rate.

These air purifiers are often used for ambient filtration as a complement to source filtration. These high-performance units have flow rates ranging from 1250 to 12000 m3/h.

Heavier particles fall to the ground quickly while finer ones remain suspended.

Purification focuses mainly on the finest and lightest particles, as they have a very long sedimentation time (from several hours to several days per meter) and are the most harmful because they penetrate deep into our respiratory and blood systems. These finer particles are also more numerous, and are obviously the ones that remain suspended in the air the longest.

How to choose an air purifier?

Assessment of specific company needs

Selection

Analyzing pollution sources, types of pollutants present, and areas to be treated to determine the most suitable solution is an essential step. The type of pollutant and its concentration allow for selecting a high-performance filter system, but also for determining whether source capture or ambient treatment is needed (depending on pollutant accessibility). The choice of filter is very important, as it will allow for proper treatment of polluted air within your workspace. The finer the particles, the higher the filtration class that should be selected.

Filtration capacity and treated airflow

Selection

Ensure that the chosen purifier can treat the air volume of your industrial space, taking into account airflow and filtration efficiency. The larger the space to be treated and the higher the dust load, the more airflow will be required (and vice versa). It is also necessary to consider your constraints: compliance with OELs, gray room, clean room, etc.

Maintenance and operational costs

Selection

Consider ease of maintenance, availability of replacement filters, and associated costs to ensure sustainable and economical use.

How to validate the effectiveness of an air purifier?

Check the certifications and standards met by the device, such as HEPA standards for filters, and request case studies or client references to evaluate performance in similar environments.

It is also possible to verify the purifier’s effectiveness by taking dust measurements before/after treatment in the workspace where your air purifier is located. Dust measurements can be taken in the ambient air or on operators (OEL).

Common Questions on Industrial Site Purification

Capture pollutants at the source or treat ambient pollutants?

Source capture is always preferable: it prevents pollutants from dispersing throughout the workshop. However, if the source is diffuse, inaccessible, or multiple, ambient treatment becomes the most effective solution. Ideally, combine both for optimal protection.

What are the benefits beyond air treatment?

Obera air purifiers, such as the ePUR or FILTOWER ranges, help reduce heating costs by recycling warm air. They also function as air destratifiers, limiting thermal stratification in large volumes. Result: healthy air and significant energy savings.

Saturable filters (ePUR range) or regenerable filters (Filtower range)?

Filtower Operation
Filtower Operation

The ePUR filters are single-use, ideal for sticky or wet dust.
The FILTOWER range uses cleanable cartridges automatically regenerated by compressed air, perfect for large volumes of dust or fumes.

Air purifiers and COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2)?

The HEPA H14 filters in our purifiers capture 99.995% of particles ≥ 0.1 µm, which is much smaller than a virus like SARS-CoV-2. They provide an effective barrier against airborne viruses and bacteria. This technology is used in demanding environments such as medical or pharmaceutical settings.
