OBERA Reduces Dust Risks in a Malt House

Situation Analysis

Malt House Dust Risk Reduction

Craft Malt House

ART MALT BIO is an artisanal, organic, and local malting plant, located in Vernoux en Vivarais (Ardèche). It embodies a brand new ‘from field to glass’ supply chain project. Its management team called upon OBERA to implement dust reduction measures during barley handling.

Indeed, the finished product packaging workshop, particularly with a degerminator and a bagging machine, generates a significant amount of barley dust.

These installations operate intermittently (10-ton batches every 2/3 days), with the degerminator processing 2 to 4 t/h and sending the finished product into storage bins before bagging by the bagging machine.

What are effective solutions for barley dust treatment?

We have installed an OBNEX 160 HM dust collector that meets these requirements and more, as we have 5 capture points: 2 on the degerminator and 3 on the packaging section.

The manager’s words, once the solution was implemented

“Regarding dust collection, we noticed a clear improvement in the packaged product and especially in the dust emission in the room’s atmosphere.”

The dust collection unit, installed in one day, with 5 capture points between the bagging machine and the degerminator, drastically reduces the respiratory risks posed by fine barley dust, thereby limiting its concentration in the ambient air, and thus the health risks for all ART MALT BIO employees.

Is there an explosion risk?

Cereal dust, due to its fineness, is combustible and explosive, so there is a real risk of explosion. The ATEX OBNex dust collector from OBERA that we chose perfectly meets ATEX requirements.
