Industrial extraction offers technical solutions for controlling air quality in workshops, storage areas or exhibition halls. These solutions protect against health risks (CMR dusts) and technical risks (machines, materials and goods). After a dust diagnosis phase, the deployment of air treatment solutions against dust includes the installation of source or ambient capture systems. Let’s take a closer look at dust treatment solutions for the workplace.
Dust treatment operation
A range of professional dust removal techniques are available. Each solution is a response to dust emissions associated with the movement of materials and the use of production machinery. A dust removal system follows a well-established air treatment process:
- dust collection (wood, plastic, metal, silica, seed, chemical, etc.) ;
- dust transport in the plant ;
- dust filtration ;
- dust recovery ;
- reinjection of clean air into the workspace or evacuation to the outside.
Dust treatment solutions
Solutions for dealing with dust in the workplace avoid the concentration of dust (health risks and explosion hazards). Each process is designed to prevent the reintroduction of dust into the workspace and professional environment.
Let’s take a look at the two main solutions: ambient dust extraction and source capture.
Ambient dust treatment

How do you ensure dust treatment when the work process is mobile or in constant evolution, or when dust emission sources are diffuse? Ambient dust extraction is highly effective. There are two systems for dust treatment: air handling units (AHUs) and industrial air purifiers.
Dust treatment: the air handling unit
Very often, these air-handling machines are located outside the workspace. A network of ducts and pipes, connected to these machines, circulates throughout the building. The aim is todraw in a large volume of air. The air handling unit has different filtration stages (depending on the dust to be treated).
Industrial air purifiers: dust treatment solutions
This ambient dust extraction solution is a ductless system. The dust collector is available in a range of power ratings. It is positioned within the workspace. Depending on the dust load, these mobile systems offer :
- saturation dust filters (ePUR range)
- removable dust filters (FILTOWER range)
The system draws in air, collects dust and discharges dust-free air back into the room. Several filter types are available (pre-filter, fine filter, absolute filter).
Dust treatment: extraction at source

When dust emissions are localized, vacuum extraction at source is possible. Solutions for dealing with dust in this way include industrial dust collectors, dust collection accessories and duct and piping networks.
The industrial dust extraction system
The industrial dust collector is a system for extracting dust at source. Three types of dust collector exist:
- industrial mobile dust collector (indoors) ;
- small dust collector (inside) ;
- stationary industrial dust collectors (indoor or outdoor).
Depending on the dust load to be treated, these units are equipped with saturation filters or removable filters.
Accessories for dust treatment: source extraction
Various types of accessories are available to treat the dust emitted by a workstation :
- capture arm ;
- extractor hood ;
- suction backsplash ;
- suction cabin or plenum ;
- vacuum table.
These dust collection accessories are compatible with a mobile industrial dust collector, a fixed industrial dust collector or a centralized installation.
Dust extraction at source via a network of ducts
Emission sources are sometimes identified and fixed. Among the existing solutions for dust treatment, the centralized vacuum system is the one that can provide the bulk of indoor air treatment. A network of ducts circulates through the workspace, connected to an air handling unit. Source capture accessories are directly connected to this.
An air purifier is generally very popular with manufacturers as a complement to the air treatment of an air handling unit.
