Carbon fiber dust during composite machining

Carbon composites are widely used in high-tech industries.

According to composite materials manufacturer Hexcel, these materials offer an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, which explains their use in the aerospace and automotive sectors.

However, their processing often requires machining operations.

Machining processes

The main machining operations include:

  • drilling
  • milling
  • cutting
  • routing

These operations produce dust consisting of fibers and resin.

Risks related to composite dust

According to INRS prevention recommendations, dust generated during machining can cause:

  • respiratory irritation
  • skin irritation
  • eye irritation

Fine particles can remain suspended in the air. This composite dust represents a major risk in the workshop.

oberA solutions

They allow for source capture of dust on milling machines or robots. The Dustomat dry enables direct suction at the robot head to capture residues and dust from machining and milling. oberA dust collectors are ATEX-certified and equipped with three filtration stages: a first stage of cartridge filtration regenerated by compressed air (jet pulse), a second stage of activated carbon to treat VOCs generated by the vaporization of organic resin compounds during machining-related heating, and finally a HEPA H14 particulate filtration stage to treat ultra-fine carbon particles.

Our solutions also allow routing and grinding operations to be performed on oberA downdraft tables, which are themselves equipped with three filtration stages (pre-filtration, HEPA H14, and carbon).

Finally, in work areas generating large quantities of dust, they are equipped with our ATEX industrial vacuum cleaners, featuring W2 XR models certified for ATEX Zone 22 to clean workstations at the end of the day and vacuum floors.
